Expansion of the Charles C. Deam Wilderness

The act proposes to add approximately 15,300 acres to the north, east, and southeast of the existing Deam Wilderness, more than doubling its size from 12,953 acres to 28,253 acres​​.


Creation of the Benjamin Harrison National Recreation Area

Alongside the expansion of the Deam Wilderness, the bill seeks to establish the Benjamin Harrison National Recreation Area (NRA), comprising over 29,000 acres of additional national forest land surrounding the expanded wilderness. 

Climate Change and Flood Mitigation

The act aligns with Presidential Executive Orders on climate change and local government initiatives, aiming to mitigate against increased flooding risks and promote old-growth hardwood forests​​.

Recreational and Conservation Benefits

The act is designed to enhance opportunities for hiking, backpacking, wilderness camping, horseback riding, and mountain biking in the National Recreation Area to be established.

It also emphasizes the ecological importance of maintaining mature forests for clean water and carbon storage, as well as providing habitat for rare and endangered species​​.

Federal Advisory Committee

The act proposes the establishment of a Federal Advisory Committee, including representatives from local governments, private landowners, conservation and recreation groups, and experts, to develop a management plan for the National Recreation Area.

Protection of Endangered Species

It emphasizes the protection of habitat for endangered species like the cerulean warbler, timber rattlesnake, and various bat species, ensuring their continued survival in Indiana​​.
